What We Do

OBJECTIVES

On a volunteer and non-profit basis, the Society will seek to achieve these objects:
  1. To provide affordable learning opportunities for seniors (age 50 years and older) on academic topics they select that will be arranged and monitored by the peers they choose.
  2. To liaise, develop linkages and partner, when practicable, with other organizations that share common goals.
  3. To promote and advocate the interests of seniors in the field of life-long learning.

Programming

Under normal circumstances, Seniors' College produces 60-75 courses (six weeks in length) in three terms per year. These are delivered in several communities (chapters), with Halifax being the home base. The other chapters are in Truro, Mahone Bay, and Liverpool.  More may be added in the future according to local interest and capacity.  In addition to courses, Seniors' College provides special public lectures during each term.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We would like to acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.  This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. This series of treaties did not surrender Indigenous land, resources or sovereignty but instead established rules for an ongoing relationship between nations. We recognize the significance of these treaties and the need for continual learning and engagement in the work of the truth, reconciliation and equity. We are all treaty people. We also recognize that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies and contributions have enriched that part of Mi’kma’ki known as Nova Scotia for over 400 years.
